Does anyone know if SMS 2003 is capable of remotely shutting down workstations at a set time every night?

We use sms advanced clients

By default it doesn't allow for scheduling of shutdown on remote PC's.  That being said you CAN use the remote tools to do shutdowns in conjunciont with shutdown.exe (or group policies), or check out SMS companion it has a load of tools and can do scheduled shutdowns/restarts.

Also another product is specops, I use it at a couple of client locations in conjunction with WSUS for gpo/patches:

specops was a good tip.  if only it had some scheduling ability.  I had looked briefly at smsexpert.  it seems like an additional agent needs to be installed on the workstations. I'll take a closer look at it.

I guess my question was answered though, out of the box, sms 2003 cant help me with scheduled remote shutdown of workstations.  Thanks

Yes, you can create a new package that runs the SHUTDOWN command.

You can then advertise this to the client machines that you would like to shutdown.  You can specify an exact time that you would like the machines to turn off.

Also checkout this product which uses group policy or registry settings and is deployable as it comes as an MSI.  Thus it works without SMS or System Center.
