Windows XP Not Saving Settings after Reboot

Hiya,

sounds like a mandatory user profile , look for a ntuser.man in your profile folder.
If xp finds a ntuser.man , it will not save changes on logoff.
The normal filename is ntuser.dat.

Also check the NTFS permissions on your profile folder , you should have full access.

Since you have a new pc, and are using the admin account, the first thing I would do is to create a new second account.

Start/Control Panel/User Accounts

Then create a new admin account called Lianne for example, with no password.  After it is created, restart you pc and logon with your new account and see if you have the same problem.

It's always better to not use the admin account and save it for emergency access only.

I have also tried creating another account but that has the exact same problem.

could you perhaps run msinfo32 and post the info here if you don't mind? You can edit out personal info.
  I'm interested in the software that is installed and the services running.

I am glad I have not installed my software yet, as this is not that easy to look at once exported to text, I am really grateful for any assistance with this as I dont want to have to format a brand new machine:

Thanks. In the meantime I did a re-install from the Windows XP SP2 disk, and it then works perfectly, the problem with that is I lose my CD / DVD writing software and it is not avalable as a download on the Dell site. If it wasn't for this I would go down the total re-install route. I have now restored my backup image so the problem has returned. I think the problem has to be with the Computer Administrator account type.

I have tried editing the registry and setting [hkey_current_user\Control Panel\mouse] SnapToDefaultButton = 1, but this is lost after reboot.

Did your cd/dvd burning software come installed with the pc from Dell?  It should be on their website.  What is the name of the software and I can take a look.  Also would need your Dell model number.

Yes it was already installed, I have looked on the Dell site and couldn't find the software. The laptop is a Precision Workstation M90, the software is Roxio Creator Plus - Dell Edition. Thanks

I image the reason that Roxio Creator Plus is not shown is because it came as an option with cd/dvd burner.  You can probably still get a replacement CD from Dell by calling their customer support (Dell chat or telephone).  Be sure to have your service tag number.

Not the quickest solution, but worth trying.

Thanks Expert4XP, unfortunately none of these are the actual Creator. The DLA is the drive letter access. The DigitalMedia is an upgrade to be usedif you already have DigitalMedia on your machine (not the creator suite). Dell do not supply a CD other than the Windows XP one that came with the computer. For some weird reason a restore disc is not an option on the precision systems. I think they will probably end up having to come out to sort it. If they are not prepared to provide a download for the software, afterall this is how the machine was supplied, and I have got next business day support.

I had hoped to resolve this over the weekend, I have seen numerous postings on site regarding similar issues with lost settings, but no-one seems to be able to resolve it. Thanks for your help.

Lianne, I knew you didn't have the 3 listed, but just wanted to show what they had.  It's good you have the next business day support, because they should straighten it out.

Dell does not include all the application software that they ship on their downloads pages.  For example, I have Microsoft Office 2003 that came with my PC, but I can't download it from their website.  

I have the CD though.  If I lose that CD, I will have to do the same thing you are doing -- contact Dell for a replacement (once they look up my service tag etc.).

Expert4XP>> I can see what you mean with regards the software, I don't think MS would be very pleased if they provided a download for Office etc. The only problem I have is that if a download is not provided then they should have provided the software on a CD. The only CD's they provided were Windows XP and Mcafee security suite, the DVD writer is a standard component in the machine so a backup of the software should be available.  I have emailed Dell regarding this and will hopefully have a response by Monday morning, if not I will be calling them - again. When I first noticed this problem (Friday) I rang and they told me to reinstall Windows from the disc and everything else was available via their download site - which I now know is incorrect.

This won't make you feel any better, but recently Dell began charging to include the Windows XP startup CD with a pc purchase.  I think it is $10.  That gives you an idea of the direction computers are going--first manuals, then manuals only on cd, now optional cd's!

What makes it worse is that if you din't realize it, you won't have the startup cd when you need it most--an emergency.

It makes you wonder what they will charge for next. But the weird thing with this is that a startup disc with a backup of the software on was not an option, and the Windows XP pro disc came free. Whereas, with the inspiron I purchased at the same time I purchased the system restore disc and windows discs for £5 each. Unfortunately the software I need isn't on these discs either.

I would rather pay an extra £10 on the system and be supplied with the discs (i.e. unable to opt out of receiving them).

I have resolved this myself, the problem was caused by the Synaptics touchpad driver and software. I have now completely uninstalled that and it works a treat. I can cope without the extra functionality that it gives me; I always use a mouse and for the functionality I require from the Touchpad I can easily get from Windows own drivers.
