Windows 2003, single domain, active directory, domain controller also checkmarked as global catalog.

1) Open AD Users & Computers
2) Open group object
3) click tab [members]
4) A warning message is displayed, "A global catalog cannot be located to retrieve the icons fro the member list.  Some icons may not be shown".
5) click [ok], and the members are in fact displayed.

What is the problem?  I have never received this error before.  And I am beginning to notice some other trouble with by Exchange Server's connectiblity with AD.

thanks,
chuck

how is your DNS configured on the DC (NIC and service settings) and the exchange server? (do an IPconfig /all for DC AND exchange server and post)
can you ping the DC from the exchange server by IP and name?

run on the DC start-run-cmd->dcdiag, post results

open your DNS management mmc console, expand DNS->servername->forward lookup->napsnetwork.com

click on _msdcs do you have an Alias(CNAME) record?  should look like this:

Name----------------------------------------------Type-----------------------Data
9e598dcd-bc92-42ef-ab64-87d1a969d237       Alias(Cname)                apps1.napsnetwork.com

if you dont see it create it, restart the DNS server and rerun the dcdiag

the above CNAME record should be under your napsnetwork.com in the folder '_msdcs'

For the record, I do not have any subfolders in the directory: ...->forward lookup->napsnetwork

The listings in napsnetwork include the following general groupings.
- local computer names and their DHCP assigned IP
- server computer names and their fixed ip addresses
- four external IP addresses with DNS entries for: stats, www, mail, smtp
- two (same as parent) values referring to apps1.napsnetwork.com
  + Start of Authority (SOA)
  + Name Server (NS)

So thanks for your input, before I add the subfolder _msdcs, are there other standard DNS subfolders that I may be missing?

So I will create the following along with other missing subfolders:
...napsnetwork.com
   _msdcs
       CNAME record

I found the command netdiag /fix,
which automatically repopulated the standard subfolders in the DNS folder, including the _msdcs.

I no longer receive the global catalog error.  YEA!

Thank you for your great help.  I will update and hopefully close this question with the final assessment when I return on Monday.
