web design business in the netherlands

I'm considering moving from the U.S. to the Netherlands. But how would I run an English speaking web design business from the netherlands?

Would you plan on targeting European or American clients?

Most NL people speak english a lot better than other European countries, they are one of the most advanced when it comes to bilingual with English.  But you will not really succeed against the competition -- NL has some of the smartest programmers in the world, as I see it, several of the TOP TOP gurus on this site live in the NL.  So you are going to have to partner with an NL native to make a success.  About 25% of sites there, as I see it, are completely English, and they use COM and org sites, an NL site is not going to give you business.  Sorry, but that is the reality.

I would target American clients also, but I don't see how to get past the long distance telephone.

Do I need a netherlands job?

I would get a Vonage-type phone with a US number, so that the clients don't know you are half way across the world. I would also shift my hours, so that you are reasonably acessible.

Do you already have US clients? If you are starting a new business, it should focus on the Netherlands, and you will probably want to just get a job first, so that you can become comfortable with the new environment.

The telephone issue shouldn't be a problem at all.

Skype (now owned by eBay), www.skype.com, has very advanced VoIP (Voice over IP) technology, and extremely good rates. With Skype you can get "SkypeIn" (http://www.skype.com/products/skypein/) which gives you a U.S. telephone number and voice mailbox. Your U.S. clients can call you in N.L. for the price of a local or national U.S. call. Also, with "SkypeOut" you can call the U.S. any time of day or night at the rate of just 0.017 EUR per minute (http://www.skype.com/products/skypeout/rates/).

Skype-to-Skype calls are free.

So, all you really need is a flatrate broadband connection, and calls will be practically as cheap as an e-mail :)

here a list of some of those websites:

www.monsterboard.nl
www.vacaturekrant.nl
www.megajobs.nl
www.jobtrack.nl

or try next link: http://www.google.com/search?q=vacature

("vacature" is dutch for "job opening")

Thanks a lot guys. It looks like I could even move to Amsterdam as long as I had a profitable web design business running here in the states. If anyone wants to comment on that, cool.

I'm going to close this...

Thanks again,

Bob
