Epson Printer

Epson Stylus Color 980. Sometimes, it prints, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't it acts like it is jammed and gives a jam indication with the lights. When I send something to print, it gets ready to go and makes the noise right before the rollers start turning, but it quits and starts flashing the lights.

I have no idea what gets it to work again ... sometimes I shake it around a bit and it will work again, other times it won't.

The printer is not jammed ... there is no paper blockage, and never has a page jammed midway through, so there has never been a situation where I have had to remove a stuck page.

I cannot find an online repair manual, so I can't locate the paper jam assembly to see if it is acting up. If someone can direct me where to look inside of this printer, I would appreciate it.

Could be blocked nozzles.  See here, you'll have to scroll quite a bit of the way down.

While I can find any free service manuals for you, I would suggest getting a can of compressed air and blowing the heck out of everything in there...jam sensors can, in fact, be set off by an excess of dust/debris.  If the issue does turn out to be dbrunton's suggestion, the dust is an almost guaranteed secondary effect...make sure to give both a shot and good luck!

£Could also be that the paper transport can't pick up the paper properly. This happens often with old printers, and the only thing you can try is to take the printer appart and clean everything, particularly the rubber rollers that should transport the paper. sometimes roughing those rubber rollers (maybe with course sandpaper) might help. Also use only fresh paper which is certified for your printer.

In my experience an intermittent paperjam error is very often due to a foreign object falling into the paper transport. Take off the top cover (flat blade screwdriver) and check the area around the rollers. I have retreived sweets, blutack, drawingpins (candy, ? , thumbtacks) guitar picks and God-knows-what else from in there!
Give it a gentle shake...can you hear anything rattling? When you are sure it is clear, fire it back up and see how you go...

Good luck!

Agree with rindi, could be the paper pickup. If the rubber is dried-out, use sillicon spray first, then roughen...

added info: it actually faults out just prior to trying to pick up the paper and pass it through.

Have you tried to print without any papers into it? I meant to see how the printer acts, I had a similiar thing with my HP printer, but before pulling the paper it just keeps holding up the paper and restore it down to it's place without pulling it, I then take out the cartidge and put it back in and noticed that there was a small plastic tape followed by the cartridge which caused this to happend...!

Maybe you can look into the printer's cartridges both the black and the colored, took them out and hook them in again to make sure they are well set, Also i guess there's backdoor for your printer, open it and check for any stucked papers, there could be a small piece of disrupted papers..

I also dought it's the roller in case that the printer is old, then probably it's starting to getting crackly.. If you can swap it with a new one then this would probably solve this problem, sure not only one you have to change. I guess most of them should be changed for avoiding any further problems.

We opened it and did as thorough a cleaning as we can.  It has before the paper is lifted.  There appears to be a 3/4 to 1/2 circle gear on the right side (looking down on it front close to you) that starts to move/turn and rise to engage.

Sometimes it continues and other times it stops and returns down to its original position.

Can you take the printer cover off and make sure that the roller is working properly???

StardotstarAuthor Commented:
Yes, we have done that.  Initially when we took it apart and cleaned it all worked well.  Then it started acting up again.

In reality though, not sure if we would not if it was not.  The only thing we see is that when it works the gear mentioned above stays up and when it malfunctions, it retreats.

With ink squirter printers, you probably won't get much help in trying to get them repaired. The only thing you may be able to do is change the printing heads. Ink jets are just too cheap for the manufacturers to bother, and the time it takes to get them repaired costs more than a new printer. The manufacturers don't normally make any money from the printers, but rather from the cartridges and paper.

Contacted EPson they said, sounds like it needs service.

Yes I know it is not worth fixing.

No it never made a clicking noise.

Just works randomely, whether with or without paper.

you send it in or you could attempt to fix it yourself  or could just buy a new printer

Epson IMHO  are good printers with ink concerns  but the failures tend to be a bit higher

my dad has a epson stylus color 600 he gets a deal on a website for it using non epson ink just generic for about $8 for a set of three  either black ones or colors ones.  it is like a 3 for the price of one deal.  and we never had any problems with the ink either  all looks great  been using this ink for about 3-4 years or longer now.
