Determine date when an image was taken

What is the best way to check the date of when a photo was taken with a digital camera. Are there tags in the jpg that I can use to determine the time the photo was taken, how do I check them? Or do I have to check when the image file was last edited and how do I do that?

The jpeg image format itself does not contain the creation date information nor any other date information.

Ok, but there has to be atleast optional tags added by digital cameras because the camera knows and also when I check the jpeg in a text editor it contains dates...

Extract from jpeg:

ÿØÿá8EExif  II*         ’       ²
   Ê              Ø       à   (       1          è   2             i‡        OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA          OLYMPUS OPTICAL CO.,LTD C120,D380     H      H      v571u-76                        2006:05:14 15:35:14

Then can You provide the exact camera model?
I'd recommend to browse their web pages for optional fields, but that may be a little bit difficult

Here, it looks like I found the document which explains the Exif file format, usually used by photo cameras and which is used in this case:
