Resetting root password on OS X Server

Thank you for the instructions on how to change the root password.  I purchased the server at  a garage sale and do not have the user name or password or the system disks.  My next problem is:

After I enter the /sbin/SystemStarter, it gets hung up on "Waiting for IPFilter" and the Localhost% prompt will not reappear.  What do I do next?

The system is probably specifically configured for the network environment of the previous owner (IP addresses, routing and DNS configuration, etc.)  Since your network setup is unlikely to match, many of the network services will likely fail to start properly.  They eventually time out after 60 or 90 seconds, but then the next one waits for another 60 or 90 seconds....  It can take a long time to finish booting.  I suggest you boot into safe mode so that you can reconfigure the network preferences:
