Is there any way I can make my windows 98 or windows XP machine as gateway for internet access for my network like Squid proxy..? Presently I have a linux box running squid as gateway for my network..?

I tried various proxy servers. But i need to configure all my applications at client end. I want to know is there any way i can make my windows machine as Gateway..?

Hi shanraj,

you need to configure Internet Connection Sharing on the windows box

local area connection properties, advanced

I would stay with linux, it is much much more secure and better to use as a gateway. Otherwise as mentioned above you can use ICS.

Do realise that ICS makes your Windows machine actually a gateway router with Network Address Translation.  Normally, you did the same on Linux, but a Proxy server such as squid is not the same as a gateway router.  This explains the differences between them:

if you install Routing and Remote Access from the software menu in the configuration screen you have a world of extra options in comparison to ICS. Including VPN. Statis routes, specific ports etc...I find it easier and more robust/secure to use.

You only have that with server versions of windoze, but not 9x.

Routing and Remote access is disabled in XP:

But you will find ICS is easier to set up than RRAS, hence the fact that RRAS is disabled in XP and available on the Server platform.

if you have squid running fine as a proxy then why do you want to switch to ics? ics is weaker then squid.

Let me post some comments on it... Windows ICS makes the IP address as 192.168.X.X by default. Again this is a problem. How to overcome this...?

finaly I understood that a Windows machine can not be configured as Gateway like a *NIX machine..

Thanks.

Don't use windoze, or then get a 3rd party tool like wingate to share the internet connection.

I'd just stay with linux, or use a router, as they aren't too expensive these days.

Or, after ICS has been set up, just go and manually change the IP address it's assigned to the computer.
