Or how could I repair the operating system to get the computer to boot up...it is s nortin problem I think...it will get to the desktop and then the message comes up that it has performed an illage operation and then when I click the close button it stays just when it is at...the mouse works but the start button don't come up or anything else...have tried to reinstall windows but it says that the hard drive has a compressed system or something like that and cannot reinstall windows and then I tried the compaq reinstall disk and it want to reformat and then I would lose the data so that won't work?
jpnmore,
You should be able to get the files you need to be able to import your old messages and address book to the "new" computer. By default the files will be in the locations below. I doubt that you will be able to access the email attachments.
Address Book - C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\
Messages - C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\[some dir]\Microsoft\Outlook Express\
The folder I listed for address book should contain a file whose name ends with .wab. That is the file with your address book.
The messages folder will have a directory whose name starts with a curly bracket ( "{" ) followed by numbers etc. Hopefully you will only have one folder in the Indenties folder. If not, try each to see if it contains the appropriate subfolders (i.e. Microsoft\Outlook Express). Inside the Outlook Express folder you should find a number of files, one file for each "folder" in the program. Copy all of the files.
Messages and address book can be imported into the "new" Outlook Express program after you set up an identity (i.e. open it the first time). Choose the import option in OE to do this. When you import the messages you should choose the "import from store" option instead of from identity.
Reformat and clean install will produce the best results for a stable machine.

Copy those files to a safe place and use the import options of OE as roughly explained above.
