HP Laserjet 4000 Problem printing to Tray 2

Have a client with a HP Laserjet 4000.  Can't get it to print to Tray 2 by default.  It will invariable try printing to Tray 3 or manual feed Tray1.  I prevented it printing to tray 1 by going into configuration and switching tray 1 from letter to custom.  Now it prints to tray 3 only.  If I force it to print to tray 2, on the LCD screen it responds with an error 41.3 unexpected paper size.  I just did a maintenance kit so all the key rollers have been changed.  I double-checked the guides in the tray to make sure they were all snapped in correctly in the right dimensions.  Does this mean there are faulty size-detection switches? Is there any way to know for sure?

Did you set the paper size and default on the printer itself?  I've had a few 4000's lose the settings magically in an office I support.  After screwing around late night on it I stumbled into the menu on the printer.  Adding the optional tray means you need to account for it in the client PC in the settings, but you need to make the default size on the correct tray on the printer as well.
note that beside to the setting that you make via the printer control panel
you can set the paper size from the tray itself !
make sure that the tray is not damaged and set to the right paper size.
and try to look for small round switch that select between A4 paper to custom.
i had similar problam with HP 4200 printer and this switch solved it.

Sounds like you might need a firmware update.
Have you tried the firmware upgrade?

Where do you get a firmware update for the printer?  I looked on HP's site but couldn't find it.
