Built in backup fails

I have configured the built in backup utility in MS 2003 server. It continues to fail after 3.99 gig. This is happening on 3 of our servers. It is backing up to a external hard drive. Trying to find out if there is some size limit that needs to be changed to allow the backup to finish and not stop at 3.99 gig.
