ISA - Access FTP site outside of network

Hi All

I am having issues access FTP sites outside our business network.

We have a Small Business Server Sp1, ISA 2004, and it is acting as a router, our design is this:

Client ======= SBS Server ======= Router ======= WWW

When i try to access a FTP site through the browser, or through Cute FTP Pro 6 i get a message like this:

            *** CuteFTP 6.0 - build Nov  3 2004 ***

STATUS:>        Getting listing ""...
STATUS:>        Resolving host name
STATUS:>        Host name resolved: ip =
STATUS:>        Connecting to FTP server (ip =
STATUS:>        Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...
220 Welcome to SmartyHost FTP service.
STATUS:>        Connected. Authenticating...
COMMAND:>      USER userID
            331 Please specify the password.
COMMAND:>      PASS *****
            230 Login successful.
STATUS:>        Login successful.
            257 "/"
STATUS:>        Home directory: /
            500 Unknown command.
STATUS:>        This site doesn't support the 'features' command.
COMMAND:>      REST 100
            350 Restart position accepted (100).
STATUS:>        This site can resume broken downloads.
            350 Restart position accepted (0).
ERROR:>         Timeout (60000 ms) occurred on receiving server response.
ERROR:>         Failed to establish data socket.

Could this be due to a problem on our ISA server? I have created an all open out rule so that no ports are blocked on the way out, so i didnt think that this would stop it.

Any suggestions?

And, if that suggestion doesn't do the trick, I did notice you are using PASV transfers, so you may need to modify ISA a bit to support that:

i'm reposting from where you logged the other question

Looks like the FTP site is not accepting some of the commands from cute ftp.

maybe if you change to PORT mode

link here on how to do it.

you can also try using the basic ftp interface from dos and see if this simpler connection lets you get in, as it might be a problem with CuteFTP

go to dos by going to START > RUN > CMD

in dos type FTP
put your username password in when prompted

and after your in type LS and see if it lists.

if it does its a problem with CUTE
Question has a verified solution.
