I just installed e-trust Internet Security Suite which has anti-virus, spyware etc.  It also has firewall protection.  Is this a different firewall from that which the xp home has.  I'm confused.  Should one be disabled and the other enabled?

you should not run both.  either go with the internet security firewall, or go with the windows xp one.  trying to use both can cause you headaches.

traditionally, software firewalls offer a little more protection than the generic windows xp one.  i suggest disabling windows firewall and using your internet security one
