Does the character encodings of pages matter to SEO.

Looking on the page analysis of G. Sitemaps and my client has 4 encodings on the site.

CP1252 (Windows Latin-1)
ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1)

Does it make a difference to SEO having different types.

    Hi Shane,

    No, it doesn't matter at all.  As it's the job of the web browser to interupt what is said on the web page itself.

    As far as SEO goes, the differences that come into play would be only related to your domain name if it was a country specific domain (cTLD) or IP address in another country.

    However, in regard to what encodings you're seeing, they are fine.

    We often encode our web pages by declaring the encoding to a browser through the use of a meta tag in the header. This meta tag then instructs the browser how to use an appropriate font for that script and to display its contents.

    For example, for an English web page you would see the Windows Latin-1.

    You would see the following for such languages of English, Spanish, French, German, etc.

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

    And for your Unicode (UTF-8, any world language) you would see the following:

    Unicode (Any Language)
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">

    Most of your browsers today all support Unicode, but not all might have the correct font to properly display that language.

    I hope this information helps.
