getting list of installed applications into text file

What is the easiest and best way to get a list from a computer of all the applications that are installed on the computer ? and if the information exists, the name of the software company or owner – the latter is more of a wish list requirement and insert them into a text file or something similar. Is this possible ?  Maybe a batch file or something ? this is only required to be run on Windows XP computers both Home and Pro editions.

Have u looked in Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs?

U can get this info from the registry also

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Uninstall

lots of keys in there, each key will have info about s/w installed, usually uninstall string

Yes i have looked in Add/Remove Program !! lol...

We need an automated way to collect information about what software is installed on our computers. If i extract this key and copy it to a text file would this show what has been installed ? When does an applications become 'installed' on a computer i.e. when will it put an entry into key and what if the application does not have an uninstall program ?

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Uninstall

the only other suggestion is to write code that will read the keys in

It will have the software provider's name and any subkeys
but this is not elegant, as u can tell

thats if u want to do it yourself

another freeware u could try is this one
    from the site it says
SIW - System Information for Windows. This program perform computer configuration analysis and diagnostics. It gives detailed information about your computer properties and settings, detailed specs for CPU, motherboard, chipset, BIOS, CPU, PCI/AGP, USB and ISA/PnP devices, memory, monitor, video card, disk drives, CD/DVD devices, SCSI devices, S.M.A.R.T., ports, network cards, printers, operating system, installed programs and hotfixes, processes, services, serial numbers (CD keys), users, open files, system uptime, network, network shares, as well as real-time monitors for CPU, memory, page file usage and network traffic. It displays currently active network connections, passwords hidden behind asterisks, installed codecs, and more.
This program also creates a report file, and is able to run in batch mode.
A standalone tool that does not require installation - one less installed program on your PC as well the fact that you can run the program directly from a USB flash drive.

to find programs with no control panel add/remove programs entry, u could try searching for *.exe, then determine that - check file for version/creator etc. But again this cannot really be automated for you
