calling a bean from a custom jsp tag

Below I have custom tag that works like so:

<customer name="barney"/>

I want to call the customer name from a properties file. Im trying to do it like this:

<customer name="<bean:message key="" />/>
I keep getting this error:
Attribute has no value. Im sure its something to do my quotes??

All help is appreciated.

    instead of <customer name="<bean:message key="" />/>
