Do a search on google for backup software.  You will come up with a lot of options.

Backup exec is some of the worst, buggiest software ever made.

What do you want to do?  Incrementals, differentials, or complet system backup?
And do you have a network that can handle a remote drive sitting on another computer?
Or are you fixed on the problems and issues with tapes, or can you scrap tapes altogether?

Hello guys,
To my experience Acronis True Image is the best backup software.
It contains incremental, differential, complete system backup and files/folders backup features.
I've tried many other programs like Ghost, Veritas, NovaBackup, but only True Image has a foolproof intuitive wizard and the highest level compression. By the way it works faster then others (I've checked).
You can try its trial, I'm sure you won't be disappointed with it. IMHO

Man..you guys all provided great input.

Scratchboy - to answer your question, I would like to do daily diff backups, full weekly backups, and full monthly backups.

My problem is that my daily backups run, but my full backups don't.  It almost takes 6 some time 16 hours for my weekly backups to run and then they crap out after 16 gigs.  I need a solution, and I need one fast.

Then as Slaid said, try Acronis True image.  You can get a trial copy off the web, I think, and it is quite good at full backups.  The only thing I can fault it for is (1) it is not very intuitive, but you can get used to it, and (2) many versions do not correctly backup the open system files using a snapshot technology, i.e. it loses them.

Maybe the new version has finally got this working.  The other thing you need to face is if the backup job is taking 6-16 hours and then dying, you might have hard sector errors on the hard disk, where the data cannot be read.  In this case, any *complete* backup will die because it cannot read the sectors.  To see how to get around this, see my latest comment on this other question -

I have tested NovaStor NovaBACKUP (http://www.novastor.com/pcbackup/backup/n_backup.html) and it uses a humane, intuitive UI.  I did not test it with a tape device, just disk to disk.  They have a 30-day trial and they don't nag you (you have to register).  It's simple to download and install.

does novastor pcbackup get the open windows XP files, like registry, ntuser, and everything else that is locked by the OS while running?  Can it also backup as a file list, or is it all compressed into a single archive / zip file?

Yep.

So it can make a backup as a list of files, say 12,500 files on your C drive, and they appear at the destination as individual files, if you used windows explorer to view them?  i.e. not a single compressed archive file?

I don't recall about compression.  I zipped the files while testing and don't remember if there is an "uncompressed" option.
