What is the best way to handle website redirect?

I have 6 domains, and I want all of them to come to the same address.

I'd like them to all redirect to the main one...

So I have the html to handle the redirection, but how should I set this up on my server?

Should I actually have 2 websites setup on 2 different IP addresses?

Any tips?

Thanks

Hi,

What are you trying to do?? Do you have multiple webites and would you like them to point to one specific webserver??
If so, you can set redirection in the default website, just right click it, choose properties and then go to the directory tab, then, choose "use another server"  and enter the ip address of the centralized server, this way you don't need html files or anything else..

If you just want to know if you need to setup multiple servers if you want to host one website, the the answer is no. You can easily se up one server where multiple users can connect to, just make sure they are able to connect to this machine by it's FQDN..

do you have 6 domains all wanting to go the same website or do you have 6 domains that you want to run off of the same server but all with different websites

All 6 domains to view the same website.

If maindomain.com  is the main domain, then If a user types www.secondarydomain.com  I want them to be redirected to maindomain.com.

If you are running iis

multiple identies for this website in the advanced tab under the properties of the website is where you will configure this.

just add the 6 headers for the six sites all on port 80 and the one website will answer for all six domains

Apache will be similar with editing the conf file.....

I'm using IIS.

If the user types www.secondarydomain.com  into their browser,

will it switch what is displayed in the address bar to be www.maindomain.com  ?

That's what I'm after

Thanks!

If you want the address to change you will need to setup 6 website 1 for each www.xxx.com

in the home directory tab select of the website properties select a redirection to another url instead of a directory located on this computer.

use http://www.maindomain.com as the redirect to

put a check in the exact url entered above.

This will change the name in the address line of the browser and take you to www.maindomain.com

Ok then , at least your honest.. ;)

Just for future reference. If you want to accept multiple answers, you can do a split points (at the bottom of the asked question) or if non of the answers are correct, just ask for a refund of points in the community support area....

Just out of curiosity, what solution did you implement..

I setup 2 websites

1 called redirect, that points to a folder with 1 htm file in it that redirects to my main site

the second one is the main site.

So, domains 2-6 are sent to the ip address corresponding to the redirection website

Domain 1 is sent to the ip address corresponding to the main website

From the viewers standpoint, they always see the main domain name in the address bar (either they typed it, clicked their way there, or were redirected to it)

This achieves all of my goals

I should add:

6 Forward Lookup zones in the DNS settings
