Few days back my desktop pc turned off suddenly. and its not starting anymore.
Try to switch it on but the power doesnt seem to work. The mother board light is on when i plug the wires but when i press the power button to switch the pc on the fan doesnt start. Dont know whats the problem. May be the" power sw" wire that comes from the power button to the mother board is not workin or else.

Tried using my hard disk in friends pc but hardisk doesnt seem to work. I can go to the bios and modify changes as well also the the pc detects the keyboard and other stuff in the start but doesnt load the windowsxp anymore and keyboard also gets stuck after wards when i select to start window from the options below

start window normally
safe mode
safe mode with cmd
safe mode with networking

when i select one of these options the screen becomes black and their is a bar that load sin the bottm. but then windows logo doesnt come and it stucks.

What can be th problem. Plz guide me with this

A disk from another PC won't work when you move to another box, as drivers that need to load are different from the ones in your PC. Sometimes Safemode might work as only a minimum of drivers are needed, but that can also be a problem because of windows activation violation with different hardware.

To test the power button, remove the lead on the mainboard and hold a screwdriver to the power pins. If the PC starts it could be the button. This is highly unlikely, though.

Remove everything from the mainboard, including the heatsink of the CPU. Clean both surfaces thoroughly and add just a tiny bit of thermal transfer paste, then reattach the heatsink very firmly. Add just one stick of RAM and the VGA card and try starting the PC that way. Swap the RAM and test each stick alone in every slot. If the PC starts, add the other hardware one by one...

    >>   but when i press the power button to switch the pc on the fan doesnt start.   <<  you can try another power supply, or try starting by shorting the power-on pins on the motherboard connector.(as said)

you can slave your drive to another computer's primary drive (set jumpers correctly & be sure bios is set to autodetect) - it will boot from the primary drive, & should show your drive as the next drive letter, if it is accessible (you can open files on it) then the drive should be ok

try booting from an xp cd & run Repair    "xp recovery console"

    try running these commands
    chkdsk /r
