PROBLEM WITH CD BURNING

While I am burning a cd (i.e. with 17 songs, it will only burn 11) it will stop and give an error and not burn the rest of the songs on the CD....  The message told me to try a different brand/maunfacturer and I did, it said to lower the recording speed and I did, it said to check the connection and it is internal and cam installed.  Please help, I have messed up a lot of CDs.

is it always stopping on the same song?  if so, there may be something weird with the file.  try removing that song from the group you're trying to burn.

also, make sure the total size of the songs does not exceed the size limit of the cd

and...what program are you using to burn?  perhaps try another burning application.  there are lots of free ones available, such as iTunes and MusicMatch

It does not stop on the same song...It is been happening with any playlist that is trying to be burned.

The size of the files do not exceed space allowed and there is always space left on the cd.

I have tried to burn in Media Player and on Roxio.

Do you have any other suggestions?  I have done all those things already.

From the question I believe that you are trying to burn an Audio CD. The size of the files which are I presume as an MP3 files.

Audio CD works in time and not is file size.
i.e : 5minute song in MP3 format with 64k bit rate encoder may take up only 3MB but 5MB if encoded using 128bit rate.

Look at all the songs you want to burn and see whether it is more that 70mins in length.
i.e: If each songs is 5minutes in length than you can only make 14 songs max.

Make sure you have plenty of free space on the HD. Run defrag. Also shutdown unnecessary software and drivers from running that might be slowing the thing down. Also check your burning software that "burnfree" or whatever it is called is activiated.

Download the latest version of HijackThis

http://www.hijackthis.de

run it and save the log. Paste the log to the following website

http://www.hijackthis.de/en

Follow the following exactly:

At the bottom of the page you'll see a "ANALYZE" button. Click it and you will have an analysis of your log. Now a new button, "SAVE ANALYSIS" will show up at the bottom. Your analyzed log will be saved to a page on that homepage, of which you can post the URL here. I should then be able to see if there is any software causing problems.

I agree with Smiffy13 but you also might want to check limitations on your burning software. It may not allow you to do more than 11 songs.

Try with burnatonce. It is a freebie burning app and can help reduce the chances of your propblem being with the app you are currently using.

This is a brand new computer and burner, it was purchased in March (from Dell).  I don't have another burner or computer to try this on.  One of the error messages says, "Windows Media Player cannot burn the files to the CD.  Verify that the disc is clean and not damaged.  If necessary, select a slower recording speed or try a different brand of blank discs."  The other error message says "There was a problem writing to the disc.  You can try again by clicking the Retry button.  You will need another blank disc ready."

I don't think that there is a limitation on the number of songs because I have made Cd's with 18 songs before.  It just one day stopped burning cd's all the way through.

Any more suggestions????

Use hijackthis (if necessary in safe mode) to remove these items:

Then try again. Hijackthis makes backups, so if necessary you can allways return these things.

Could you tell me what these things that you told me to remove are before I remove them??

It'll stop realplayer, quicktime, itunes, messengers (which can be missused to compromise a system) from starting at boot time. It'll also not start the DSA agent, limewire and a download manager etc. All these resident tools could be disturbing your system and aren't necessary.

So once I go back to hijackthis I need to put a check into the boxes of these items...after that, which of those buttons should I click: "Scan" or "Fix checked" ??  Then, where will hijackthis store those things at so I will be able to find them??

Firmware updates: right click My Computer, click properties, click hardware tab, click device manager, open "DVD/CD roms" a description of your device should be displayed. Mine says "Lite-On DVDRW SHW-1635S" with this information I can search the Lite-On wb site for updates for my device.

"Fix checked".

The backups are put into a directory under the one where you ran hijackthis from, and in hijackthis there's a button "Config", then another button "Backups", and you'll see the list of them. You could check those you want restored and then use the button "Restore".

I followed the directions that you gave me and that did not remedy the burn problelm.. After I "fixed" those things I attempted to burn a CD and it still won't burn a cd, I have tried to copy a disc that was purchased and burn a disc that was compiled.

I was told by another person that if I find the "underrun buffer" (this may not be the term they used, but something about a buffer) and click the option to change that setting, then it will work.  The problem with that is I don't know where to find that option.

Smiffy 13

There is no name to the device. In the area that says manufacturer, there is no name it says "Standard CD-Rom drives".
This is the series of numbers and letters that are listed next to the burner icon, on the properties page:
HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B

rindiCommented:
In nero it is called "buffer underrun protection", settable in a "new compilation", "burn" tab. Sometimes it is also called "Smartburn", or "burnfree". If you are copying a CD, don't use "track at once".

Based on those numbers/letters and according to the Dell website it seems that no firmware updates are available. I see there's been a few complaints about this drive in the Dell forums. Hopefully the suggestions you've got so far will fix the problem.

I would like to thank you all for the assistance that you have provided to help me resolve the problem that I was having with my CD burner.  To day I found out from Dell that I have to get my burner replaced.  A lot of the information that was provided helped me, outside of the burner situation.

I would just like to say, Thank you again
