HP 2420 problem with printing

We have a HP 2420 (on lpt port ) connected to server 2003 sbs.  There are about 15 workstations (XP) .  At least once or twice a day people will try to print and nothing happens.  You look at the printer and it says ready.  If you turn the printer off and then on again the jobs start coming out, sometimes with garbage that you need to cancel, but mostly clean jobs.  Any idea what is happening.

When a print job hangs and user continue to print to the printer, you will get a backlog of print jobs that will print once the original print job has cleared. You should clear print jobs the "Printer and Faxes" folder.

HP printers is notorious about printing strange symbols after there has been a disruption to a print job. In order to clear the job, unplug the printer for a few minutes, then plug it back in. This will clear the job.

Might want to monitor the type of job(s) which the printer hangs with.  Is their any consistentcy with the type of print job and the printer hanging?
Another thought is when it hangs can you talk with the NIC (JetDirect) by entering the IP into your browser?  If you can't then this might point to a communication issue with the NIC (JetDirect), Patch Cable, etc...

    Hope this Helps!!!

ok is thias printer attached via parallal or via a Jetdirect interface (ie lpr), i'm not sure if you mean LPT1 or LPR in the original port.

if it is LPR try installing hp's latest port monitor software, - download their install network printer wizard and install it on the server and you should have an option for the HP standard tcp/ip port.

also if it is via JD then trun of the unused protocols ie, ipx/spx and apple..

try moving the printer to a computer other than your server.--is this a dedicated file server or only for the printer???

I would check the spooler settings in the print driver on the server.
any other setting than "start printing after the last page has spooled " will cause this sort of problem.
also Unticking "enable enhanced printer features" may help, as can increassing the print buffer and timeout values on the printer itself.

Problem solved! HP 2420 connected to USB port on WIN SBS 2003 ( in Device Manager/USB Root Hub/ uncheck: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power ) and in HP 2420 printer settings (not in drivers ) disable PowerSave.
