Search stopped working

When I try to search for something on our windows 2003 server, nothing (almost nothing) comes up in the results. Searching for *.exe turned up only one result, which was located in the recycle bin, when searching My Computer. I turned indexing on sometime last week and searched for something, and nothing showed up (I knew the file existed). Turned indexing back off and still having the problem. Any ideas why I can no longer search? Searching for the same files in DOS worked fine.
