Backup exec 9.1 backing up desktop/laptop with no agent

I wanted to backup a few laptops using backup exec 9.1, I used to do this before without any agents installed, it would tell me no agents are installed on this machine warning but the backup would still run without any problems, this time I can't even select a machine, the selections are usually grayed out or even if I select it once the backup starts it give me an error that no agent was detected.  Is there any way around this so that I can still run a backup on desktop/laptop without the backup exec agent?

You can try mapping the drive you want to backup to a drive letter on the server and then run the backup. But generally I don't see a good reason to backup PC's with backupexec, what you should rather do is make sure the users store the data on the server (you could use the synchronization option you get with XP), or make an image of the PC's to the server using something like acronis trueimage.
