Problem with DSL modem/PC link repeatedly dropping on new DSL service

Got DSL from Qwest yesterday.  I've got a CAT5 cable running (supplied by qwest) between the DSL modem & the XP  laptop's ethernet card but the link keeps yoyoing up & down (LAN disconnected, LAN connected, LAN disconnected, etc.).  Other than replacing the cable (wiggling doesn't seem to help), is there anything I can/should do?

it's possible the modem is bad.  you should contact Qwest if replacing the cable doesn't do the trick

Oops...sorry.  I switched the connection from the network card to the riskier USB port & it works OK so it may have been the network card, but no way to tell for sure.
