SPAN width and text-align in Firefox

I am trying to assign widths to SPAN tags and then right-align the text within them. This works in IE but not Firefox. How can I make this work in Firefox?

<style>
#content{position: absolute; left: 200px; top: 110px; padding: 0px; z-index:0; width:790px;}
div#content span.title { width:500px; vertical-align:bottom; }
div#content span.title_links { width:290px; text-align:right; }
</style>

<div id="content">
  <span class="title">
    current bills
  </span>
  <span class="title_links">
  <a href="#">help</a>
  </span>
</div>

try adding float

<style>
#content{position: absolute; left: 200px; top: 110px; padding: 0px; z-index:0; width:790px;}
div#content span.title {float: left; width:500px; vertical-align:bottom;  }
div#content span.title_links {float: right; width:290px; text-align:right;  }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="content">
  <span class="title">
    current bills
  </span>
  <span class="title_links">
  <a href="#">help</a>
  </span>
</div>
</body>
</html>
