Search in XP doesn't work

I can't be the only one out there that this is happening to.

The search feature in XP doesn't work. I have this happen on older machines and brand new ones. All are running XP SP2.

When I either try to right-click on a folder and select search or run it from the start menu, the same thing happens. The search box starts to pop-up and then I either get an error that "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close" or the desktop disappears momentarily and then re-appears but with no search window. I did some research but the only thing I found was that I need to run a repair from the original installation disk. How could this be on a brand new machine? I gotta think something else is breking this.

Anyone have any ideas short of running a repair on all my XP workstations?

Thanks,
Dave_O

If you've upgraded an XP that has Symantec Norton SystemWorks 2003 installed, or you uninstall Symantec Norton SystemWorks 2003 from an XP, this could occur.

have you checked to see if your indexing service is off? this shouldn't cause the problem but it's worth a shot
control pannel\administrator tools\services find the indexing service and make sure it's running.

Dave_O  ..    reference the 1st comment, i must admit that it's difficult to see how this could be the case on a brand new machine.     Investigating further.

There are a few ideas quoted here in this 'newsletter' which are worth viewing ...

Brady1408,

My index service actually was turned off but still no luck after turning it on.

Jonvee,

We don't run Symantec here and I did peruse the ideas in the newsletter. Some pretty good stuff but before I tried some of those suggestions I tried re-installing the Search Companion provided in the link by LeeTutor and it seems to be working now.

Thanks for the suggestions,

LeeTutor,

Lo and behold after re-installing the Search Companion per the link you sent me, my search seems to be working now. I'll be going around to the other machines and trying it out.

Many thanks,
