Programming outbound fax capability in OS/400

I need to add simple outbound fax capability to our forms printing application without a) using IBM's FAX/400, b) attached PC, or c) anything other than native hardware (for example, the 7852-400 Modem ).

I've read that one can write one's own Fax system using ICF, data queues, and HPT (host print transform).

Any ideas of where to find sample ICF code for async communications to start?

Even better, a sample ICF fax program would be even better!

Great question!
There is a manual for ICF programming at:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/topic/books/sc415442.pdf
The rest I will have to think about.....

Thanks, Barry...

...that is a good place to start.

Will check it out, but I'd love to see some sample fax sending code. I can handle the data queues and HPT it's just that writing a fax program on any other platform is so straightforward.

I wanted to use Java on the AS/400 but IBM said there's no comm api for Java on the AS/400. They said to use JNI to call RPG to speak to the iSeries comm resources.

Thanks for the start,

Hi, Shelz
I might be able to help....Would the source for paging software help? It configs the asynch line/controller/device, creates the ICF file, and initiates the dial/connection to a paging company. If you know the fax side, that might be enough.

Here is the link for the paging software, including source:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/5581/tapframes.htm
You can use this as a starting point, and be sure to credit the original author if applicable.

Thanks, Barry...

...having a sample ICF file helps a lot. Give us a few days to digest the code.

Thanks, Again,

Dave, we decided to add support for IBM's Fax/400 instead of writing a native iSeries Fax program -- it was just a faster solution to the needed fax support.
