product key change on windows 2003 sp 1 doesn't work editing OOBETimer

Hello everybody!
I'm trying to change the OS product key on a win2003 sp1 server
( Build 3790.srv03_sp1_rtm )
and the usual procedure
changing OOBETimer value in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents
doesn't work,
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
keeps saying that windows is already actived
even after a reboot....
does any one has a suggestion on why this happens and how to change the
product key?
many thanks
G.

Hi golemwashere,

See the comments by srdjanz and CombatGold1  int eh below EE article.  The accepted answer was to reinstall but the script provided later by these two may help you out.

The only way to do this is to do an "inplace-upgrade".

Using a 2003 SP1 CD with the same Standard or Enterprise designation, simply run WINNT32 from the CMD window off the I386 folder.

You will only need to repatch the server completely after this.

This method is the only one I know of that will work to change the key/build type.

I tried the vbs script but I get this messagebox:
Invalid Operation 0x80041016
I'd prefer not to repatch the server (the are a couple of installed apps which probably would not appreciate)
Thanks
