Changing directory name by FTP

For FTP access to my website I use good old WS_FTP32. I'm happy with it except for one thing: I can't change the name of a directory at the server side (only names of files). Is this an inevitable restriction of FTP protocol or not? Are there any simple FTP programs that are free from this limitation?

It depends on the security policy of your access.

For example :

-rwxr-xr-x  joe  acctg  archive.sh
-rw-rw-r--  joe  acctg  orgchart.gif
-rw-rw-r--  joe  acctg  personnel.txt
-rw-r--r--  joe  acctg  publicity.html
drwxrwxr-x  joe  acctg  sales                      <----- this is a directory
-rw-r-----  joe  acctg  topsecret.inf
-rwxr-xr-x  joe  acctg  wordmatic

Let's see this link to understand the symbolic notation of file system permissions :

If you are using windows do the following:
1. use ftp command at command prompt
2. type open <website name>
3. login using your username/password
4. use dir command to view directory contents
5. use cd command to goto the root of required directory(whose name u want to change)
6. Now use rename command to rename the directory. the format is
rename <oldName> <newName>
