AVG BLOCKING ALL EMAIL - URGENT!

I tried AVG under the one-month-trial offer, and was annoyed that it would run in the background, slowing down my computer, at times not selected by me.
I ran Uninstall.
Now I cannot receive email and cannot send email. I've tried both with Outlook (which is my program of choice) and with the Firefox email program.
I get messages reading

Task 'Bill - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'
Task 'Bill - Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

My provider is ComCast. My incoming emails are via Earthlink, where I maintain my domain names.

Help, PLEASE.

Very strange.  I use AVG and have found it to be a first rate AV program.  It's especially nice compared to the piece-of-junk that Norton AV has become...

Anyway, I suspect that somehow AVG did not get uninstalled properly.  The EMAIL scanner part is a "hook" that intercepts SMTP and POP network connections so that the messages can be scanned.  The AVG uninstall should remove that hook and put things back the way they should be.

Did you uninstall as an administrator?  If not, it might not have been able to do what it needed to do.

Once easy thing to try would be to re-install AVG, and then uninstall it.  But I'd recommend giving this program another try.  I use V7.1 and am very satisfied.  If the re-install/uninstall doesn't work, post back here.  I've got some information somewhere on how to find and fix the registry entries where the "hook" is installed.

By now my subscription has ended, so unless I can delete the hidden info that tells the installer I've already tried the program, it's not letting me reinstall.

If this helps any, when I first uninstalled, the program planted something in Outlook that caused an error message EVERY FEW SECONDS(!) complaining of a .dll file that couldn't be found, and telling me to run Outlook's Detect and Repair. Which I did, several times, without success.

I'm strongly disposed against any program that would create such a problem.

I'll be willing to bet you have something undesirable on your system that caused this problem.  I've used AVG with Outlook OE, Eudora, and Thunderbird and have had no such problems.  Installed it at a client site with 30 PC using their network version, flawless.

Have you done a spyware and anti-virus scan?  Use a stand-alone one like McAfee Stinger since many viruses these days disable your installed AV.

Stinger claimed it found and deleted some viruses, but the problem did not go away.

Two things:

1) Stinger only looks for SOME viruses.  The fact that it found anything is a bad sign.  Try re-installing your preferred AV and after you update it, run a full scan.

2) One of more of these viruses may have messed up your networking so that SMTP and POP are broken.  You may have no choice but to re-install Windows at this point.

The solution that worked came to me from my co-author, hacker Kevin Mitnick: he suggested doing a clean-up with "Window Washer." I'm not sure why that helped -- I thought it was just going to delete temp files -- but the problem is now fixed.
