indexed pages dropping in Google - What's wrong?

A couple of weeks ago we started doing some SEO on our website www.eventplanner.be. It worked really well and we are getting a lot of organic traffic BUT we do have an issue with the indexed pages in Google.

This is the problem:
Within 2 weeks after we implemented some optimisations the amount of indexed pages in Google increased from about 700 pages to 50.000 pages. Now, after several weeks this number is dropping to 47.000. Is there something to be worried about? Something we have to take action on?

Fyi, the extra pages were created by making a static sitemap to our database. In the past this database was only available trought dynamic queries.

Thx,
Kevin

Google is definately going through a change. I have posted many posts on here about this, answers coming back relating to google Dance (datacenter update), new algorithms etc etc

More information can be found on matt cutts blog, where he nearly admits something is up.

Google is getting very strict and is now looking at historical date for your rankings.

The work you are doing probably is all good, you may have to just sit it out.

Hope this helps.

In the mean time I read that Google has a seperate bot for new pages. Fluctuations may be due to the switch between idexes...

I have had similar issues. I've spent weeks SEO-ing a site and the rankings in Google just continue to drop. First I managed to get the site listed on the first page (with a competition of millions) and the more SEO work I do, the more the rankings continue to drop. A lot of pages dropped from position 1-10 down to 100+ ...

I've also heard reports from clients that their sites suddenly disappeared (or dropped) from Google, after years, without having done any (or much) work on them...

So, I agree with Shane, there does seem to be some major changes going on.

Have you tried comparing Google with MSN and Yahoo?

Around the same time I started noticeing changes and hearing reports, there were some changes done to Google Sitemaps also.

Google Sitemaps gives you very summarized reports on what keywords people are searching for to get to your site. All these stats (for about 15 sites) had disappeared all of a sudden for quite some time, and are only starting to reappear now. Maybe it's just a waiting game...

topevents can you post information on ther seperate bot for new information if possible.

With Google my clients ranks are scattered in top 100, with msn and yahoo i am front page with mainly number 1 spots....

Google new whatever there doing may take some time to re value and re-index all of its results. This has been going on now for a number of months.

Had a same problem, had over 200,000 pages of my site added in google and then they dropped the lot, I then wodered why and what I did is create a google sitemap and google is slowly indexing my pages again. I think this happened to many site over past 6 months. Google is changing becuase microsoft will bring out vista at the end of the year and its search is msn supported, get my drift. The search tools is also in office 2007 and they are very fast and very handy. Google is bringing out new idea if you have seen to be the best, bring on msn, google needs a big fish to knock them off the chart. I remember the days of altavista was the biggest search engine untill google stepped in lol.

To index your site then a great tool is: http://www.auditmypc.com/free-sitemap-generator.asp
Google sitemaps: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/

Hope this helps.
