Backup Exec + Volume Shadow Copy

Can anyone help me with an issue I am having reguarding Backup Exec ver 10.0 and Volume Shadow Copy on a W2K3 box? This particular server is a citrix server and Backup Exec is doing a remote backup of it. Everytime the backup runs, it calls for the VSS service but I have disabled the VSS service from running. I have not selected for the backup software to do anything with the Volume Shadow Copy. Also, everytime this happens, services.exe goes from using 20MB of RAM to 170MB of RAM.

Thanks in advance,
Mas

A full system backup should include the open running system files, which are only gotten with the volume shadow copy.  There is little point doing a full backup if you never backup the OS registry and system files.  It is just a databackup, since the backup copy will never be bootable or runnable without the open system files also being backed up by volume shadow copy.

It shouldn't call VSS unless you have 'use advanced open file option" checked under the AOFO part of the job properties and only then if you have the "automatically select open file technology" or the MS VSS selected.

I don't have the option to change that setting. We never purchased it.

Actually I should say that the screen for the option is greyed out and non-selectable.

I should also note that this seems to be happening on days when the backup does a full system backup of the server.

Do you have system state selected? Backing up that also uses VSS.

Well I turned back on the vss but haven't changed anything else. The problem seems to be gone for now so I will cross my fingers. Thanks for all those who helped.
