Disabling streaming audio on Cisco Router

It's been a long time since I've done this but I have a customer that wants to disable streaming audio on their Cisco router. I believe it's a model 1721 and I'm looking at an inbound access list probably to do the trick. Before I do this, what protocols do I need to disable in the access list, ports, and what drawbacks could occur? A sample config would be nice too!

Thanks!
Michael

Michael,

  It is a too vague question :-) What kind of streaming audio and which one? Based on their main 'headache' of streaming audio source, we will be able to dig more on it. Say for example, you can do Yahoo Messenger or Skype for phone calls. Or is it some kind of online song streaming?

Cheers,
Rajesh

Yeah, I kind of figured that after I looked at what I posted. I'm looking to stop streaming audio for music over the internet. I believe the protocol is RTSP but I'm sure there is more than one. Internet radio is the big offender but there could be others.

It isn't as simple as it looks for the reason that the streaming audio can work in various modes if users chooses it to do it. However, if we are talking about Windows Media Player, you could try blocking certain ports as mentioned in the URL below;

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/serve/firewall.aspx

But still if somebody makes a connection through HTTP protocol then it is going to be a problem for you. The best bet is to try blocking above ports and see if it makes any difference, if not, then have it blocked through Active Directory policies for Windows Media Player.

This should substantially reduce usage of bandwidth. Try 'em and see.

Cheers,
Rajesh
