What is the exact error that you are getting?
Is there any error shown in application logs?
Which version and service pack of exchange is this?
Please try :

Create an SMTP connector to the destination domain  or forward the mail to your ISP smart host to resolve the issue.

Have you installed anty disclaimer software for outgoing mails? If so try removing that and then check.

this is service pack 3
also I see in the queue for all emails enumerate messages from the queue node
I set up a smtp connector for sbcglobal.net .do i need to do this for all domains I want to send out to

sbcglobal.net is your ISP domain or you are forwarding mails to this .

Please try this to configure SMTP connector it will definitely help you to sortout your issue:

I set up the connector for my domain and things seem to be getting a little better
I still have a lot of things that look like spam sitting in there and I can not delete them!
could this be part of the sending problem ?

sending to the local domain works great
