I have one site and a decated dell server to run SMS on it. I have installed sql 2005 and sms 2003 on this dell server.

I'm offering 500 points to get sms working and able to do a pc audit.

You have already installed SMS and SQL?  So, you already have it installed... what else do you need to know?

Did you extend the AD schema?  And install SMS in Advanced Security mode?  What version of SMS 2003?  SP1? SP2?  You should download and install SP2 on the SMS server if you have not already done so...

http://www.microsoft.com/smserver/evaluation/2003/sp2.mspx

To extend you AD schema do this:  http://www.myitforum.com/articles/8/view.asp?id=6324

After this , you can configure you site...

1) Launch the SMS Administrator console on the Site Server...
2) Expand Site Heirachy --> Site Name --> Site Settings...

In here highlight the Site Systems tab: Double click your server name...Go to each tab...

- Place a check mark in User this site system as a reporting point
- Place a check mark in Use this site system as a server locator point
- Place a check mark in the Use this site system as a distibutio point and place a check mark in Enable BITS
- Click OK to save these settings

In Site Settings, highlight Client Agents:

- Hardware Inventory Client Agent --> Check ENABLE hardware inventory on clients...click OK to save
- Software Inventory Cleitn Agent --> check ENABLE software inventory on clients...click OK to save
- Remote Tools --> Check off all check marks...  On the Security tab, add the ADMINISTRATORS group -->
- Advertised Program Client Agent --> Check ENABLE software distibution to clients... click OK to save
- Software Metering --> Click Enable software metering...click OK to save

Right CLICK your Site NAME and choose Properties from the drop down box.
- click the Site Boundaries tab...  Click the STAR to add boundaries...  List all of your IP subnets here...  if you have multiple, add them all.  Or as an alternative, you can add AD site names here...

Under Site Settings, click Discovery Methods --Double Click Active Directory System Discovery...  Enable this by checking Enable active directory system discovery   Then click the gold start and select your local domain.

Click POLLING SChedule...and click RUN DISCOVERY ASAP...

Now wait.....

Eventually, your computer systems will be discovered and listed under the COLLECTIOn --> ALL SYSTEMS...  Once your systems are listed here, you can right click the COLLECTION and choose to INSTALL the CLIENT.

One more important thing... go into Site Hierarchy --> Site name --> Site Settings --> Client Installation Methods.  Double click Client Push Installation...  On the Accounts tab, specify an account that has admin rights on all clients (such as a domain admin account...or if you have a common local admin account you can use this format:  %machinename%\username

You need to specify this account to push out the SMS 2003 client on your client machines...

NJComputerNetworks,

As far as I can tell the schema is already extended.
When I follow the direction  on extending the schema under windows 2003 it talks about permissions to publishing.
There was a folder already there called Sysmtem Management. two other folder that are in it is called
sms-mp-252-dellserver06 and sms-slp-252-dellserver06.
My site code I set is 252.

NJComputerNetworks,

There was no Remote Tools option. I went ahead with the instruction and I do see systems listed in the collection\all systems client = no, assigned = yes.

NJComputerNetworks,

I do not get any information from the client.
I open the collection,
click on all systems,
right click on a computer
choose all task,
click on Start Resource Explorer
if I click on hardware, hardware history, software
There is no information shown about this computer.

I have tried this on several computers that are listed in all systems

Looks like the schema is extended...because you have the "sms-mp-252-dellserver06 and sms-slp-252-dellserver06" information published in AD.

Looks like you discovery has worked and you have the proper BOUNDARIES set on your site.  This is because you have found computers under your collections.

However, you are no going to get the RESOURCE EXPOLER information until you actually install the SMS 2003 client software on the computers.  To do this, right click the collection --> All tasks --> INSTALL CLIENT

This will push out the SMS client software to your computer systems.

But before you can push out the client, make sure that you have done this:

One more important thing... go into Site Hierarchy --> Site name --> Site Settings --> Client Installation Methods.  Double click Client Push Installation...  On the Accounts tab, specify an account that has admin rights on all clients (such as a domain admin account...or if you have a common local admin account you can use this format:  %machinename%\username

You need to specify this account to push out the SMS 2003 client on your client machines...

I have gotten this far.
I have set the domain admin account as the user account to prush the install to the workstation.
yesterday I right click on collections and selected install client.
not sure why it does not show any information about the pcs after I have installed the client.
I do not know how to check it the client is installed through the admin console.
I wanted to see how the remote control works but I am not able to get this to work eather.
and all my pc are dell brand and I wanted to install the patch support for them.

"I went ahead with the instruction and I do see systems listed in the collection\all systems client = no, assigned = yes."

From the sms console, this would say client =YES if the client was installed:

I went ahead with the instruction and I do see systems listed in the collection\all systems client = YES, assigned = yes.

You may need to right click the collection, goto all tasks, and choose Update Collection Membership  (This will simply query the SMS database for the most recent information.)  After you do this, right click the collection again, and choose REFRESH...  Now the most recent information from the database will display.

To check one of your clients, go into control panel -->  look for the SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT icon.  Click the COMPONENTS tab  if some of the COMPONENT show ENABLED, your client is installed properly.  If the components only show INSTALLED , then your client is not properly "talking" to the SMS Site SErver.

NJComputerNetworks,

I ran the update collection membership and after a few minutes I did a refresh.

The weird thing is that the system that did show up, They all are set to client=no, assigned=no.
before some of them client=no, assigned=yes.

Here is what I selected when I did the client install:
right click on All System container and choose install client.
Install client option and Site Default option was already selected.
next
I selected: Include Subcollections and Always install (repair or upgrade client).
finish.

am I doing something wrong?

This is where I am getting stuck. trouble getting client to report anything about the pc.

how does yours look?  It may take some time before you will get the data on the SMs site server
