Remote Desktop

Hi, I have a Win2003 SBS server. My ISP only assigns dynamic IP addresses so I use no-ip to get a static address for remote management.

I did something recently to group policy and now cant log into the server remotely at all. Even from within the network.

I tried restoring all group policy changes to previous ones but still no good.

Any ideas?

Are you using RDC to connect to the server internally?

Did you adjust a group policy you created or one that come standard?

What error message or specifically happens when you try to connect to the server internally?

I don't think it has anything to do with your dynamic IP address. and you now have learned why it's important to never modify the default GPO's.  When you want to create a new policy, create a new GPO.  That way if you mess it up, you can just disable the GPO that you created and you won't mess up anything else.  :-)

Anyhow... most likely you modified the default domain controller policy, but to be sure... log into the server locally and run a "gpresult /v > C:\gpresult.txt" and post the entire results here for analysis.

Thanks for the help guys,

This problem is pretty weird, it comes and goes, I was fine logging on remotely when I was on site (I tested it by remoting into my home pc and trying to remote back into the server from there) and it was fine, but still couldnt get my client machines to remote into the server machine on the same domain. Then I get home and try to remote in again, having changed nothing that I know of, and now I cant... its really quite annoying...

Jeff:

Here is the log, thanks a lot for taking a look at it:

The problem is that you have a conflict between your NETBIOS domain name and your DNS domain name.  Generally these would be the same (the NETBIOS DN would just not have the .local on it) if you used 15 characters or less.  But since you didn't you now have two different domain names in use (COMPLIANTLOCAL and CompliantIndustries.local)

Did you attempt to change your domain name at some point?  You can easily see the conflict here:

 CN=COMPLIANTDC,OU=Domain Controllers,DC=CompliantIndustries,DC=local
Last time Group Policy was applied: 5/24/2006 at 7:24:37 PM
Group Policy was applied from:      COMPLIANTDC.CompliantIndustries.local
Group Policy slow link threshold:   500 kbps
    Domain Name:                        COMPLIANTLOCAL
    Domain Type:                        Windows 2000

So... when logging on remotely, try logging in as administrator@compliantindustries.local and see if that works for you.

Realistically you may have to completely reinstall the OS at this point.

Hmm not sure how that could have happened, I reinstalled the server a few weeks back because of the group policy issue I created. When I reinstalled and it asked for the company name I said CompliantIndustries and it automaticaly put that as my domain, im not sure why that got turned into COMPLIANTLOCAL.

But you think thats causing problems? If thats the case it will probably lead to bigger problems down the road right?

The thing is though, when I try logging on remotely I dont even get to the login screen. The remote desktop service tells me the error is that the server either doesnt allow remote connections or there are too many remote connections already (Which is not accurate as im the only one who logs in remotely ever). That message is the same when I try to log in from a client machine on the network or my home machine.

Well, legend has it that it takes THREE SBS installations to get it right.  :-)

But let me understand something... your question here is:
"I did something recently to group policy and now cant log into the server remotely at all"

And you state above:
"I reinstalled the server a few weeks back because of the group policy issue I created"

Is this the same thing you did a few weeks back?

No, I screwed up the group policy and reinstalled the OS a few weeks back. This is different. This time I did something to the group policy and now remote desktop connection works 1/5 of the time on the server... its really weird. I think ill just reinstall the server again because im not supposed to be driving an hour and half every day to do tech support for these guys!

But if you have any idea what I may have done to cause this problem I would love to know as a learning experience.

The lesson to be learned is what I posted in my first comment... don't modify the default GPO's other than disabling them if you don't want one to be deployed.  Always add an additional GPO for any new policy items.
