You have to access the windows files through a share via SAMBA with proper user/password authorization.  This will not allow you to backup any files that are open or locked so you would need to stop SQL server first to ensure all files are closed.

For backing up a SQL server you might want to look at something like Acronis True Image which can do online backup.  Something like this can place the backup images onto your linux server without shutting anything down.  Of course this carries price tag that may defeat the purpose of using Amanda in the first place.

Anyone Have any suggestions on Oracle. Oracle is running on RHE4 on a cluster setup.
Oracle probably also has some ways of creating dumps or then it probably uses some sort of transaction logs, so it should be similar.
