Network monitoring

Any suggestions as to a networking monitoring software? Please tell me estimated costs and where to purchase.  I have two servers with server 2003 and about 160 pc's in 4 different locations.  Using exchange, active directory and symantec firewall with VPN enabled.

Hi mputnam31,

have you looked at in built monitoring features of 2k3 server?

We use SolarWinds Orion - the costs for such a small install would probably be a couple of thousand for such a small install.

He may be talking about Performance Monitor; its a built-in app that can provide a second by second stat on anything on any MS Windows box

for the network side
I've been playing around with ethereal at www.ethereal.com.  Its a decent open-source packet sniffing program (free as far as I can tell for orgs).

Don't know about actual cost, but considering how MS packages their product,  the SMS is probably more costly than the Orion product

http://store.software-wholesale.com/symase202.html is a price I've found.
