This is kind of a strange problem that began happening yesterday. 2 of the users here reported having emails being held in their outbox for a brief period of time before sending. These users are on windows xp sp2 with office 2003 sp2 and all aplicable patches. The machines are up to date and in fine working order otherwise.

Now I know that there is an existing problem with the outlook outbox and the firewall in windows xp sp2 and I know that this is not it. The firewall has the correct settings to allow the UDP packets and I also ran some tests with the firewall turned off completely. This is different than the firewall issue because with that particular issue emails would be held until you clicked somewhere. With the issue I am experiencing now you dont need to click anywhere or do anything. The emails are just being held up for between 10-15 seconds sometimes less sometimes more.

Its not too big of a deal because the emails make it to where they need to go but I dont like things not working the way there supposed to and I would like to solve this problem to help appease the users.

Thanks

Had you tried running a detect and repair from outlook help? Is there any difference between these user pc's and the other normal pc's? Overall how many pc's with email? What server do you use and how good is the connectivity? Whats the virus guard?

I have not tried the detect and repair yet. It doesnt seem like anything in office is messed up because everything else is functioning as normal.

There is no difference between these PC's and the other computers in the office. They were all configured at the same time, they all have pretty much the same programs, hardware, etc.

I would estimate that there are between 20 and 30 pcs whos use the email.

The email server is exchange 2003 with all applicable patches and service packs applied.

The connectivity is good as the email server is actually onsite at this office.

Each user computer has symantec server corporate edition installed and definitions updated automatically. The server has the same symantec virus as well as trend scanmail on all incoming mail.

I may be pointing you in the wrong direction entirely but i sort of remember coming across a similar issue on the symantec  site. Will check and come back to you tomorrow. It's 9pm here.

Actually I found the problem, was checking the error log on the machine and I noticed that at about the same time that the email started being held up in the outbox the exchange system attendant (mad.exe) had an error the service was stopped. I restarted the service and within a few minutes there was no more delay in the outbox.

Did my comment help to resolve or did you find this on your own? Just asking because I hate taking credit for other peoples efforts!
