Options for Selling Points

I would like to be able to sell points on my website that users can then trade-in for services. I have seen many options for selling downloads and other digital media, but nothing that simply allows you to update a database with a new points total. What kind of options are there out there that would allow me to do something like this.

I simply want to have an option that allows users to purchase points, both in any amount that they specify, and in certain set amounts.

Thanks.

By the way, my site is running on PHP and a MySQL database. I need to be able to update a users points total in the MySQL database after their payment has been verified.

But what am I looking for? I don't even know what such a script might be called...

Wouldn't it be necessary to use some kind of payment processor like PayPal?

myphpnuke has point scoring systems on there, can this not be integrated to a payment module as it is freeware.

also mambo has a points scoring system

I would rather not use any of those *nuke based systems. I am building my own system, and I would like to integrate a points system into it. I have the points system up and running, I just don't know where to turn to allow users to purchase more points. I am not looking for scripts or pre-built systems, I am just looking for a service that allows you to process payments and automatically update a users account after a purchase.

Have you looked into seeting up a small shop type system where you buy the points with paypal then, this is something i have seen somewhere.

I don't want to deal with a shop. I just want to have several purchase options (i.e. buy 100 points, buy 500 points, enter number of points to buy) that link to a payment processor which then sends verification of the payment to my server along with payment details so that I can update the database with that info.

by shop though i dont mean all the basket and things like that, just the bare minimal, You want people to PURCHASE points... so you need a few tricks from a store type system.

just the basic purchase and payment modules...

oscommerce is totally customisable and i would integrate a portion of this software into your idea.

ok to do this you will need 3 things...

the first 2 you have php and a database MySQL

the last is a shopping cart. Mals ecommerce would be best for this (and its free, or you and pay for more advance version). using mals in your php site you can uses their payment system or gate ways via mals (world pay, protx, paypal) then after the payment has been confirmed and all done mals can use a postback (use to track orders and confirm payment back to your site) from here the payment has now been made the values can be posted back to your site. you can then store the new points to that users account, job done.

this is the system my company uses for doing this soft of stuff (gamming sites etc). you have to look into security and make sure you do it right dont forget!

mals is a very good cart which will allow safe postback of any values even after they have gone off to 3rd processors like world pay, and paypal, plus you can offer mnay way for your users to pay!

on the other hand if you were just going to use something like paypal (and cut out the shopping cart) they too have a way to post back to a page after a sales have completed (can not remember of the top of my head but 110% its there because i have used it before)

hope this helps, much more to it that this, but your get the idea.

just in case i have not made it clear....

Your site

1) User buys points
2) adds to shopping cart (mals)
3) checks out (mals)
3) picks payment processor (set up on mals by you)
4) paypal was pick via mals shopping cart
6) cart content sent to paypal

3rd part gate way (paypal)

7) enter payment details (name, card etc)
8) payment done, set up to go back to mals

mals
9) collect details

yoursite

10) all info sent to your site for processing mayby all done by https? or cleaver coding for better security

Ok, I think I will just give PayPal a shot. Their Buy Now buttons and Instant Payback Notification should do the trick if I can figure out how to read the variables from the IPN.

I will probably be back with questions about that shortly.
