Hi everyone, I want to start using public calendars and document sharing through exchange server, I tried to set up an exchange account today(until now I have been using pop3 and SMTP), but I'm getting the error

"The action could not be completed. The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."

I'm trying to use an external url to connect to the exchange server is this possible, do I have to set up a specific protocal on the exchange server? I'm not familiar with how the exchange accounts work or what I have to have set up. Any Help would be appreciated.

When you say trying to set up a exchange account I assume that you are doing a check name from the outlook. When you do a check name it querries the GC. Make sure that you exchnage server is running good. All the exchange services are running. SA, IS, etc... . Store mounted?

Its a RPC connection. Is the outlook in the same LAN or are  you using RPC over http.
When you do a check name use exchange server name  or ip address or GC's name or IP address.
I will need more information to assist you further....:)

the exchange server is running I can access pop3 and smtp as well as outlook web access so everything should be running and mounted, I'm using a url to connect to it, eg. it will be over LAN but I want to have global access to it as  well.

I just realized I didn't forward the ports though from my firewall I need to let them in, is the exchange server secure? or do I need to use ssl?

What protocals does microsoft exchange server use? is it the x.400 and rpc protocals or some others that I need to forward for the exchange server to work?
