Backing us SUSE 9.0 Enterprise

What is the best backup option for a SuSE Enterprise 9.0 Server that will be a file server using SAMBA?
Is there a good freeware option?

it will depend on what you are trying to backup and what you want to back it up to.

if you are just going to backup simple files - I'd just use tar to make an archive of the files, and export to either tape, or another physical server that gets backed up on a tape.

There is also amanda http://www.amanda.org/  that is included with most linux distros.

For commercial solutions, veritas backup exec's linux agent works well.
