"Secure a VPN Connection" ??? Do you mean authentication mechanisms? You can do it local, Radius, Tacacus anything like that. But I would suggest going for Radius and that too if you have a Active Directory it is pretty simple.

Install IAS and have it authenticated against AD, Configure the IAS address on the PIX for radius authentication for VPN.

Cheers,
Rajesh

A VPN connection, by definition, is already secure, so please be more specific on what you mean.

Don't use DES or 3DES, but use AES.  This will give you excellent encrypted communications for years to come...  (DES and 3DES can be cracked, although 3DES not easily).

Depending on the equipment we are talking about, different encryption algorithms can be used. As Tim pointed out above, those are the encryption algorithms, similary hashing algorithms are there for the checksum and authenticity (SHA, MD5 etc). So if you want to read more about it, you should get into the working of each algorithm which indeed is interesting if you have a flair for maths. Several online references are available and books as well.

For now, AES is chosen to be the US Govt. to be the best.

Rajesh
