You can try the Vista Transformation Pack http://www.windowsxlive.net/index.php?id=208
(Its not for the faint of heart)

Or use widgets http://widgets.yahoo.com/

The Vista Transformation Pack 4.0 has a Longhorn sidebar with only a couple of set gadgets, while there is thousands of widgets.

In the basic widget installation there are some great widgets such as Weather, Camera, CPU, Memory etc etc etc. More are made and released weekly.

Plus you can make your own or modify someone elses for do what you want.

Hi, My objective is not to achive the look and feel, but to develope the gadgets see whether it can run on Windows XP in anyway, so in the requirement specification, I can include Windows XP in it.
So, is the Vista Transformation Pack offer us a way to add a new gadgets?
Not really.

You need the widget engine.

On the http://widget.yahoo.com/ website there is developers tools and references to develop widgets.

Thanks for the information,

In Windows Vista, there is Windows Gadgets,
In Yahoo, there is Yahoo Gadgets,
In Google, there is Google Gadgets.

What I want to develope is Windows Gadgets,
What I not clear is, is this 3 gadgets same? (So I can download Yahoo widget engine to run the Windows Gadgets).

If there are not the same, is there any way to run the Windows Gadgets on Windows XP Service Pack 2?

Windows Gadgets in Vista is supposed to be like the gadgets in Apple Mac OSX. http://microsoftgadgets.com/

Yahoo widgets are the same but they can be run on both Windows and Mac under the widget engine. Also yahoo widgets were Konfabulator before yahoo bought them out.

Google gadgets run under their desktop http://desktop.google.com/plugins/

There is alot more yahoo widgets than either the windows gadgets and the google gadgets.

On the Vista Transformation Pack they have the Longhorn Sidebar but I am not sure whether you can develop gadgets for it. It basically is a skin to make your WinXP look like Vista, ie with glass effects etc.
Update.

Windows Gadgets are expected to run under Windows Vista and run on web pages.

The windows gadgets seem to be more complicated in design than Yahoo! widgets but in the end its your choice.

Both Microsoft Gadgets and Dashboard is written in DHTML, while Yahoo! widgets (Konfabulator) is written in XML.
