VB.Net - Oracle Client Deployment

Hi,

We have developed a client/server application in VB.net and used oracle as the database. My question is what do we have to install on the client machine in order to work ?
I know for sure that we have to install .net framework 1.1 .

What Oracle Client do we have to install ( can you provide me with a link on what do I have to download)  ? Is there a way to connect to oracle server by just installing an oracle client and without changing the tnsnames to point to the server (connect directly from the application )?

Thanks

For sure you need MS .NET 1.1 (or better to use .NET 2.0).
However, if you want to have an Oracle connectivity, you have two main options:

First,
Use the built-in OracleClient data provider supported by .NET framework, but you need also Oracle Client to be installed in the machine and the Oracle DB on the server should be of version 8i or higher.
To use the Oracle Managed Provider, you need to add a reference to the assembly System.Data.OracleClient.dll for your project. Seek the MSDN for how to use the OracleClient namespace

Second,
You could use the Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET, you could download the tool from oracle.com
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/dotnet/odt_index.html
and there also you will find many tutorials on how to use it

in both cases you don't need to change the tnsnames

good luck
