A question about processor affinity settings on the Intel Xeons.

Can we set the system and local service process in task manager to only ‘work’ on one core of the processor?? I know the user can set their programs to run on which ever core they want. Also if all operating system processes are running on the 1st core and user applications on 2nd core, will the os interrupt these processes? Will the computer gain any benefit from this??

    Accepted Solution

If all of the processses were single threaded and you knew the order in which every process was going to run and you had enough cores to be able to schedule this without conflict then this would perhaps be a good idea. In the real world though, the process / thread scheduler in Windows does a good job of assigning processes & threads to cores / cpu's, so let it do its job. If you tried to do it manually, the system would very likely perform worse than by leaving it alone.
