Drop Down List  - Select Color

I thought this would be an easy question, but I can't find a solution.

A drop down list by default renders white background with a hilighted blue background as you browse the list.

How can I change this via CSS or som other means to  render the hilighted  background to Red?

in IE setting the css style of the dropdown will not have effect on the control as it is a windowed object and its behaviour is different from a textox, checkbox etc ..

i think setting the css for a dropdown and checking it in another browser like firefox would show the desired result ..
