It would be nice if there was a way to find out all these differences from Excel. There seem to be some such resources, but they seem to focus on the big picture. But I am continually finding that "things are done differently, but not documented in a way that they are easy to find."
So much so, that I have often felt Writer and Calc did not offer some feature and just live with it. But I think they probably do offer the feature, but I just can't find out how to do it.

not sure if this will help much

there are some general comparison docs and reviews, but no detailed documentation on that
that has to come from the user community over the years

While the first link seems pretty general, as you say, the second one does offer some useful tips, especially in the Calc FAQ. In fact, I was able to find right away the solution to another issue I was having today.
My big gripe is that some things are handled so differently, that at first glance it appears that Calc just does not have the feature.
This was the case today with trying to control how many pages a sheet will print on, and again with losing all print ranges.
I keep saying I am going to have to throw in the towel and install Excel, but so far I have kept getting rescued and am hanging in there.

although i'm a big fan of ms technologies, i keep an open mind on how this is going to play out
i also believe that Open Office as a TA is on the list of new topics for EE, but i'm not sure when its going to be implemented
when that happens it could be a succesfull self regulated user forum on Open Office since there are quite a few around here who can help but the questions are scattered all around
and maybe when it comes you could be one of regulars who answers a few questions there ;)

could be! (become a regular who answers questions) -- thanks for thinking of me that way!
Yes, not having a specific topic is probably a drawback at the moment.

However, after closing the file and re-opening it, the indicator is now gone.
So perhaps this is a glitch?
In any case, it seems you have provided the answer.
