Sending Email through a web application

Is there a way that a web application or website can send Email without the use of a personal mail server? If so, can you please give me the alternatives available with pros and cons? thank you

    why you dont want to use mail server?  you can use a general free email account like hotmail or gmail or any other with the use of their smtp..
