Slow login for a XP client

Hi,

This problem is usually a DNS problem what I know.

I have installed a SBS 2003 server and when logging in a brand new Dell laptop "Applying personal settings" will appear for 20 seconds...Here is the ipconfig for this compiter:

Ethernet-kort Anslutning till lokalt nätverk:

        Anslutningsspecifika DNS-suffix . : mydomain.local
        Beskrivning . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx G
roller
        Fysisk adress . . . . . . . . . . : 00-14-22-F8-4B-36
        DHCP aktiverat  . . . . . . . . . : Ja
        Autokonfiguration aktiverat . . . : Ja
        IP-adress . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.29
        Nätmask . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Standard-gateway  . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.1
        DHCP-server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2
        DNS-servrar . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2
        Primär WINS-server  . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2
        Lånet erhölls . . . . . . . . . . : den 29 maj 2006 11:02:54
        Lånet upphör  . . . . . . . . . . : den 6 juni 2006 11:02:54

Note that I have at this time two more computers connected to the server and they don't have this problem, but they had it once...

The event viewer looks fine too... I'm having some DNS warnings from friday like:

The DNS server encountered a packet addressed to itself on IP address 192.168.16.38. The packet is for the DNS name "mail.clickonhosting.com.". The packet will be discarded. This condition usually indicates a configuration error.

Check the following areas for possible self-send configuration errors:
  1) Forwarders list. (DNS servers should not forward to themselves).
  2) Master lists of secondary zones.
  3) Notify lists of primary zones.
  4) Delegations of subzones.  Must not contain NS record for this DNS server unless subzone is also on this server.
  5) Root hints.

Example of self-delegation:
-> This DNS server dns1.example.microsoft.com is the primary for the zone example.microsoft.com.
  -> The example.microsoft.com zone contains a delegation of bar.example.microsoft.com to dns1.example.microsoft.com,

The DNS server has encountered numerous run-time events. To determine the initial cause of these run-time events, examine the DNS server event log entries that precede this event. To prevent the DNS server from filling the event log too quickly, subsequent events with Event IDs higher than 3000 will be suppressed until events are no longer being generated at a high rate.

The DNS server encountered a packet addressed to itself on IP address 192.168.16.2. The packet is for the DNS name "sr-wm.qbrick.com.".

  -> The example.microsoft.com zone contains a delegation of bar.example.microsoft.com to dns1.example.microsoft.com,
  (bar.example.microsoft.com NS dns1.example.microsoft.com)
-> BUT the bar.example.microsoft.com zone is NOT on this server.

Note, you should make this delegation check (with nslookup or DNS manager) both on this DNS server and on the server(s) you delegated the subzone to. It is possible that the delegation was done correctly, but that the primary DNS for the subzone, has any incorrect NS record pointing back at this server. If this incorrect NS record is cached at this server, then the self-send could result.  If found, the subzone DNS server admin should remove the offending NS record.

You can use the DNS server debug logging facility to track down the cause of this problem.

on your workstation, the Gateway is set to 192.168.16.1  where all others are set to 192.168.16.2

I assume that 192.168.16.2 is the SBS box ?     Single or Dual NIC ?

1/  What is 192.168.16.1 ??  If it is your router, it would be better to route via SBS.

2/ are you certain you dont have 'malware' running that is trying to send to clickonhosting ?

3/ is clickonhosting.com your ISP ?

The gateway is 192.168.16.1.
192.168.16.2 is my SBS box configured as DHCP etc. It has a single NIC.

1. Router - I would like it this way
2. The server is new
3. clickonhosting.com is not the ISP, it's a web hosting company that I'm a part of...

Anyway the Dell laptop seems to logon fast now and I haven't made any changes!

Your gateway is correct.  The reason you had a long logon the FIRST time a user logs on is because you've run the Configure My Documents Folder Redirection Wizard which is a good thing to do.. but it will cause a slow logon the very first time a user logs on because it is synchronizing the files.  This behavior is expected.

If you continually had a slow logon then I'd suspect that this was connected to your DNS errors.  But those ARE a problem, just not related to the workstation logons.

The errors you listed indicate that you may have configured more than one IP address for your server (192.168.16.2 and 192.168.16.38) is this true?  If so, are there others?  (You can post an IPCONFIG /ALL from the server whcih would help here).

Yes I ran the My Documents Folder Redirection Wizard the first time...

It seems that all the client computers has started to login slower now... "Applying personal settings" will appear for about 20 seconds...

The server has just one IP. Here is the server IPCONFIG:

Ethernet adapter Server Local Area Connection:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet
   Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-15-C5-5E-79-E6
   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
   IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2 < Server IP
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.1 < Zyxel router
   DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2
   Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 192.168.16.2

I found this error under the DNS Event:

Check out this posting which describes how you may have 127.0.0.1 in your DNS configuration:
